Acorns Blog - 2020-2021

Welcome back to a brand new year in Acorns Class.  This year we are looking forward to doing some amazing things yet again and sharing these with you. 

Supporting and helping us are Mrs. Foran and Mrs. Stanley, along with Miss. Poxan and Mrs. Gray.

Alien Party!!!

To celebrate the end of term we held an alien party!  We had a fantastic time and loved every minute!

Study Books

In Acorns Class we are proud of all the work we do, but we are especially proud of our study books.  We work really hard to present our work for these books and how amazing  the final pieces are!

Sunflowers.

Look at how well our sunflowers have grown!

Using the Bee Bot.

We used the Bee Bot (programmable toy) to move from planet to planet. 

Ducks

Space Pictures.

We have been learning about the planets in our solar system.  As part of this we have created a painting of it using paint and pastels.  We tried really hard and they look absolutely amazing!

Astronauts.

We made an astronaut as part of our topic.

Hanging Hearts.

We have created our own hanging hearts to sell at our Summer Outdoor Market.  The parents are going to love them!!

Space Pictures.

As part of our topic on space and the solar system, we created our own pictures.  Look at how amazing they are.

Year 1 French.

As part of our learning about the country France, we visited a boulangerie.  They had to use their French to ask for a croissant and pay with their Euro.  They then got to taste one.  

Footprints on the Moon

As part of our topic we made a footprint to represent Neil Armstrong's first step onto the Moon.

Moon Phases.

This week we have been learning about The Moon and the phases of the moon.  We created the phases using Jaffa Cakes or Oreo biscuits.

Time BINGO - Year 2

This week we have been again looking at time in maths.  To help with this we played a BINGO game with telling the time to every 5 minutes.

Making the footprint of Neil Armstrong!

We have been learning all about Neil Armstrong and the moon.  We made a representation of his footprint (the first footprint on the moon.)

Minibeast Hunt.

As part of our science this week we went on a minibeast hunt to look at the different habitats.

Pant Games.

We worked as groups to create our own games using pants.  we wrote instructions for how to play them, designed them, made them and  then played them.

Time

This week we have been looking at time in maths.  We have been learning o'clock, half past, quarter to and quarter past.  We moved on to look at telling the time to every five minutes.

Making Aliens.

Alphabetical Order.

This week we have looked at alphabetical order and using the alphabet.  We looked at the alien words and put them into alphabetical order in groups.

We looked at halves and quarters.

Pant Decorating.

As part of studying the book Aliens Love Underpants, we created patterned pants, designed our own pants and made symmetrical pants.

As part of our science topic on plants, we tasted vegetables after looking at the plants they grew on.

As part of our topic on 'The Potteries' we tasted the local food - Oatcakes.  They were delicious!!!

As part of our maths topic on shape, we went on a shape hunt looking for 2D and 3D shapes.  

Pyjamarama 2021

This week we looked at the importance of 'the bedtime story.'  We came to school in out PJs and had lots of book activities. 

 

Planting Sunflowers

As part of our topic on plants, we planted our own sunflower seeds.  We can't wait to watch them grow!

Painting Pots.

Now that the pots have been in the kiln we could decorate them ready to use.  Look how well they have turned out.

Making Pots.

This week we have been learning about 'The Potteries.'  This has included making our own pots out of clay.  We have been lucky enough to have a pottery wheel in school and we have used this to make the pots.  They will then be sent to be fired in a kiln, ready for us to paint.

'SEEDS OF HOPE'

Morrisons kindly donated compost and sunflower seeds as part of their 'Seeds Of Hope'  Campaign.  We planted our class seeds and can't wait to see them grow!

Caterpillars!

Day 9.

The caterpillars are growing quite quickly now!

Look what has arrived in our classroom!!!  CATERPILLARS!  We are so excited. They are tiny and we can't wait to see them grow.

Then we released them.

What a fantastic experience - watching the life cycle of a butterfly.

William Morris.

This week we studied the artist William Morris.  We looked at his life and his work.  We then created our own interpretation of his art.

Art - Drawing a Real Plant.

This week we have been looking at plants.  To link with this we drew a plant, looking at all of the detail.   We made an amazing job of our drawings.

Investigating Flowers.

In Science, we investigated flowers.  We looked at the different parts in detail.

Year 2 Maths - Greater than and less than.

This week we looked at using the signs < > and = to order numbers to 100.

Standon Bowers - Grounds Maps and Shelter Building.

 

Music.

In music we are looking at keeping the pulse.

Maths Year 1 - Numbers as words and numerals.

This week we looked at reading and writing numbers as words and numerals.  We also ordered them.

 

Maths Year 2 - Tens and Ones.

In maths this week we looked at place value.

Nouns.

This week in English we looked at what a noun is and found them in our environment.

Verbs

This week in our English we investigated verbs.

Investigating Seeds.

This week in Science we looked at different seeds.

Standon Bowers - Low Ropes Course and Pond Dipping.

This week Year 2 children went pond dipping at Standon Bowers.  We were lucky enough to catch a newt (Staff at Bowers said that this was very rare!)

We named our newt Spikey Mikey.

We also completed the low ropes course and were all brave enough to do the cargo net, even though some of us were scared!!!

Natural Materials.

In Art this week we looked at natural materials.  We collected two objects from outside to draw.  We drew one with chalk and one with charcoal.

Hotseating the Alien.

This week we have looked at questions in English.  We used this questions to hotseat the alien.

Something strange has happened in our classroom!  

Garden of Greatness.

We looked at what qualities we had as a person and what we were good at.  We created a display top show this.

Planting Seeds Experiment.

This week in Science we have been looking at plants.  We planted some seeds to see how they grow.  Some seeds were planted with just water, some with just light and some with no light and no water.  We predicted which seeds would grow.

Easter - Hot Cross Buns

This week we have been learning about Why Christians Celebrate Easter.  We talked about the story and what they believe happened.  We then had a taste of a hot cross bun.

Easter Pass the Parcel. 

We played a game of pass the parcel and after opening each layer the children talked about the part of the story that the pictured showed.

We solved maths questions to find the clue and gain a chocolate egg!

This week Year 2 had a go at archery.  It was great fun and some of us learnt a new skill!

Fractions - Year 2

This week, in maths, we have been looking at fractions - 1/2 and 1/4.  We ordered fractions.

National Day of Reflection.

We joined the nation to reflect on the last 12 months.  

Planting seeds.

We wanted to help to make our playground a beautiful place, so we planted some seeds.  We can't wait to see them grow!

Standon Bowers - Year 2

Year 2 are lucky enough to have a session with Standon Bowers staff  every Thursday.  This week we built fires and lit them.  We then toasted marshmallows!!!

We learnt all about what we were raising money for and all about the charity.  

Science - Magnetism

This week we looked at magnetic and non-magnetic.  We used magnets to investigate this.

Pirate hats.

We wrote instructions on how to make a pirate hat and then made one by following the instructions.  

Science - Circuits.

In Science this week we have looked at making circuits.

Puppets - we made puppets for Design and Technology.  We designed them, made them and evaluated them.


PE - We were so happy to be doing PE again with our friends.

PARTY DAY!

We finished off the term with 'a bubble party!'  It was so much fun!

Presents.

We walked in this morning to find The Elf had hidden surprises!  Presents for everyone!!!  It is amazing who Mrs Foran talks too!

'Twas the Night Before Christmas.

Acorns Class have been learning a poem for Christmas.  They worked really hard to remember the words and we were so proud of them.

PJ Day

Acorns Class won the attendance award last week with 99.3%.  As a reward they chose to have a day where they could come into school in their pyjamas.  We had a lovely relaxing time!  We even had a treat of hot chocolate and marshmallows!

Calendars.

We made calendars to get ready for 2021!

Fruit Salad

As part of our topic we made and tasted a fruit salad.  Look how delicious it looks!!!

Internet Safety.

The whole school took part in an Internet Safety morning and discussed how to keep us safe online.  We then produced posters to inform other people of what to do.  

We had a competition for the best poster and our winner was Harrison.  Well done to him.

Letters from SANTA!

Today we discovered some letters in our classroom.  When we found our own letter and read it we were so excited to find out that Santa had written to us!

Christmas Wishes for the World.

We talked about what is happening in our world and talked about people less fortunate than ourselves.  We linked it with Unicef and the Rights of the Child and then discussed what we would wish for the world.

Madame Howard sent us a Christmas quiz to do in our French lesson.  We loved it.

Yesterday Acorns Class had their Christmas Lunch.  We loved it and had fun pulling crackers with their friends.

As part of our topic on materials we made peppermint creams.  They tasted nice!!!

Salt Dough Shapes

For the front of our study books we made a salt dough penguin or polar bear.  We then covered these in tin foil. 

Hot Chocolate Treat.

When we got back from Astbury Mere we had a treat!  Hot chocolate and marshmallows!  Yum!

Astbury Mere

On Thursday 3rd December we went on a trip to Astbury Mere.  It was cold and it was wet, but we had the best time!

Each year Stoke City Football Club give Year 2 children a SCFC shirt!

ICT Christmas Cards.

As part of our topic on Christmas Acorns Class have made Christmas cards using the Paint program on the laptops.  

The Old Man

When we came into the classroom on Monday we found a letter addressed to Acorns.  When we opened it inside there was a letter from the Old Man again.  

RSHE - Friendship.

We worked together in groups to think about what is a friendly act and an unfriendly act.

Wrapping Presents.

In RE we are learning about why Christians celebrate Christmas.  We have written instructions for how to wrap a present and then we followed them to wrap our own! 

 

Making Sweet Houses

As part of our topic for materials, we made houses from sweets!  We had so much fun and it was very hard not to eat the sweets!!!

Bee Active Games

This week in PE we have been playing some new games. 

 

 

The beginning of the World

As part of our work on The Ice Bear, Acorns Class thought about and drew what they thought the beginning of the world looked like.

Making Boats

This week in Science the children were given the task of making a boat that would then float when tested on water.  They were given the choice of what materials to use.

Children in Need

On Friday 13th November we raised money for Children In Need.  We dressed up in yellow and spotty clothes.  Thank you to all those people that donated to a wonderful cause.

Remembrance Day

On Wednesday 11th November we took part in a two minute silence at 11.00am to remember all those that lost their lives in the war or fought for us.  We also took part in activities and used painting techniques to create poppies.

Building Bridges

As part of our topic on materials, we created bridges using lots of different materials for Billy Goats Gruff.

Football skills

This week in PE we looked at different football skills.

Andy Goldsworthy Art

We studied Andy Goldsworthy as an artist and looked at all of his different work.  We then worked in groups to create some of his art. 

Henri Matisse Art

We also studied Henri Matisse and his art work.  We then created our own collage based on 'The Snail.'

Science - Making The Three Little Pigs Houses.

Using different materials, straw, bricks and sticks, we made houses for the Three Little Pigs.

Happy Half Term

Autumn Term 1 in our class

Acorns Class won the attendance award with 100%.  As a reward we took a trip down to Apedale woods.

As part of our learning about The Tin Forest, we created the storm with musical instruments.

This week because it was raining outside we had our PE lesson inside.  It didn't matter to us as we had fun anyway!

On Monday we walked into school and found a letter in our classroom.

We looked at photographs and videos of The Northern Lights.  We then created our own paintings. 

The Arctic and Antarctica 

We have been studying The Arctic and Antarctica.  We looked at the similarities and differences between them and the animals that you would find there.
